Workshop

It's Written in the Stars; Developing Theme-Based Lesson

Join us as we sing, say, move and play to create a star themed rondo that is abounding with curricular content!  Workshop participants will incorporate the four steps of the Orff teaching process (imitate, explore, label and create) while making music using body percussion, xylophones, recorders and more!  We will also explore processes and strategies participants can use to develop their own theme-based lessons and performances.

Assessing the Impossible

During this data-driven time, it can be hard to create assessment partnerships in the Orff classroom that stay true to our philosophical roots.  Come explore how to create checklists for creative endeavors.  Involve students in the process of “Assessment as Learning,” and explore research to support your pedagogy.  This active workshop will involve case studies and use various Schulwerk media, especially movement, to create frameworks for a teacher-student partnership in creative environments.  All techniques are research supported and kid-tested!

Orff in the Culturally Diverse Classroom

Tailoring an "Orff Inspired" curriculum to meet the needs of culturally diverse learners can make singing, saying, dancing and playing fun and challenging for everyone, including the teacher. We will spend time with attention-getting "get-to-know-you" lessons, using diverse literature, tweaking "classic" lessons, and creating larger projects that could also become subjects for sharing in performances. In this session, we will address needs for learners in kindergarten to middle school.

Keep It Moving; Traditional World Dances and Rhythm Games

Debby will help you build a repertoire of traditional games, dances, and play parties from children across cultures. Come learn classroom-tested favorite dances and singing games. In addition, Debby will include children’s rhythm games she has been collecting in her travels and from immigrant communities including games from Afghanistan, Trinidad, Greece, Norway, Turkey, Congo, China, and more.

Visual Soundtracks: Storytelling through Creative Movement

Once upon a time a troupe of lively music educators gathered at a workshop to hear stories and to explore the ways in which those stories could be integrated into their teaching. They delighted in the variety of ways folktales, fairy tales, and fables enriched such musical concepts as melody, rhythm, timbre, and movement. By the end of the workshop the teachers not only had activities to take directly back to their students, they also had the inspiration to create new literature-based lessons of their own. And they taught happily ever after. The end.

Creative Learning Centers for the Music Classroom

Katie has been using learning centers with all grades for 3 years - on average of 6-8 lessons per year. Some center activities and games were developed for assessment purposes whereas others are great for review and practice of musical concepts. This workshop introduces how to use creative learning centers in the music classroom. Learn how to introduce centers and help students develop appropriate small group behavior in order to implement center routines into your music class.

Recorder Boost

This workshop will feature ideas for helping emerging recorder players, targeting finger dexterity and oral articulation. Recorder will be featured in various playing and movement activities for grades 3 - 5.
