American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA)

Our Berkshire-Hudson Valley Chapter is part of the American Orff Schulwerk Association.  AOSA is a national organization which began in Muncie, IN on May 11, 1968, as the Orff Schulwerk Association.  Within five years the association grew to include 1,200 members in 49 states and Canada.  Currently, the AOSA has 96 local chapters and nearly 3,300 members.  Our BHV chapter is part of Region 5 which includes 12 chapters in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Our Berkshire-Hudson Valley Chapter was the 17th to form, receiving its charter in April of 1972.  Since the earliest days, we have been fortunate to have an association with the Music Education Department at the College of St. Rose.  CSR’s ongoing support has had a significant impact on our chapter’s longevity.

Professional development is at the forefront of the AOSA’s activities.  Each year, in addition to local chapter workshops, dozens of AOSA sponsored Teacher Training courses are offered around the country.  These 65-hour courses are offered in three levels and include training in basic Orff Schulwerk music education processes as well as movement and recorder training.  AOSA levels are not currently offered in the Capital Region; however, some BHV members have completed courses in Rochester, New York City, Long Island, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.  Membership in AOSA is not required to participate in a levels course.

Membership in AOSA is separate from membership in a local chapter like BHV.  Currently, an educator’s annual membership costs $85.00.  Retired members pay $56.00 annually.  Student memberships are available with full benefits for $25.00, or online only at no cost.  Members have access to printed and online resources, as well as grant funding and professional development opportunities.  The potential for professional networking is also a benefit of participation in AOSA training events.

In November of 2019, AOSA will hold their annual professional development conference in Salt Lake City, UT.  This four-day event will be attended by hundreds of educators from around the country.  Participants will have the opportunity to receive training from exceptional music educators who are thoroughly versed in the techniques and philosophy of Orff Schulwerk.  AOSA members receive significantly discounted rates for this conference.
